Seagrass beds, which form submarine grasslands that have been declining for decades, provide multiple functions (oxygenation, stabilization of the bottom, production of organic matter, food source, spawning area and refuge for many organisms). Whereas they occupy only 0.15% of the seabed, their ecological importance is considerable. Their production capacity in organic matter and oxygen is comparable to tropical forests, coral reefs, mangroves, estuaries or upwelling areas.
